Project Name: Oyster Point Development Slope Protection

Project Location: San Francisco, CA

vegetated slope

Project Background & Slope Erosion Challenges

Oyster Point, a prominent development area in South San Francisco, experienced significant erosion on a recently constructed landscape planting slope during heavy storms. Despite initial efforts to stabilize the slope with vegetation, surface runoff compromised the slope’s integrity. The primary challenge was the steep 2H:1V slope, which was highly susceptible to erosion during storms.

Heavy surface runoff further exacerbated the erosion, making it difficult to maintain the slope’s integrity. The project owner required an economical and durable solution to stabilize the slope while supporting the growth of native vegetation, balancing both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Solution: GEOWEB® Slope Protection System for Erosion Control and Slope Stabilization

The consulting engineer reached out to Presto Geosystems’ engineering team, who provided a thorough project evaluation and recommended the installation of the GEOWEB® Slope Protection System with a GW30V6 (6-inch depth) geocell. The GEOWEB system offers a flexible, high-performance solution for stabilizing steep slopes and managing surface runoff effectively.

GEOWEB Slope Installation

installing geoweb geocells on steep slope

The Installation began with expanding the GEOWEB panels over the prepared slope area. The GEOWEB sections were connected using ATRA® Keys, which are inserted through adjoining GEOWEB cell walls, turned, and locked for the most secure geocell connection. The sections were then anchored using 24-inch rebar and ATRA stake clips in a 2×2 staking pattern, which involved staking every second cell across the slope and every second cell downslope.

The GEOWEB cells were filled with nutrient-rich topsoil and planted with native vegetation. To manage surface runoff and reduce the risk of future erosion, surface protection measures were applied over the GEOWEB system, sized appropriately for site hydraulic conditions.

The GEOWEB Slope Protection System effectively addressed the challenges faced at Oyster Point. It offered a sustainable and cost-effective solution for slope stabilization and erosion control. The use of native vegetation within the GEOWEB system further enhanced the ecological value and visual appeal of the slope, providing a comprehensive solution that met both functional and aesthetic requirements.
