Project Background and Challenge

Travis County sought a pervious pavement solution for an emergency evacuation route serving Steiner Ranch, a large neighborhood in West Austin. The steep slopes and sharp curves of the route raised concerns about the installation and long-term maintenance of the roadway.

Solution: GEOWEB® Geocells

After a thorough project evaluation, Ferguson Waterworks product specialists recommended the GEOWEB® Load Support System (geocells) to construct a stabilized gravel roadway. In collaboration with Presto Geosystems, they facilitated rapid delivery of GEOWEB panels and provided expert guidance throughout the process. Presto Geosystems also conducted a complimentary project evaluation to confirm the system’s suitability for the unique site conditions.

The GEOWEB system delivered the structural reinforcement required to prevent rutting under heavy loads, such as firetrucks and emergency vehicles, while allowing water infiltration. This dual functionality not only satisfied the county’s pervious pavement criteria but also supported the project’s environmental sustainability goals.

By confining and stabilizing the aggregate, the GEOWEB system reduced the risk of material shifting or displacement, significantly decreasing the maintenance demands typically associated with gravel roads. The stiffened base layer created by the geocells provided long-lasting durability, enabling the route to withstand the pressures of regular and emergency use.

Installation was straightforward and efficient, thanks to the integration of ATRA® Keys. These durable connection keys securely lock the GEOWEB panels together, ensuring a stable and uniform installation. The use of ATRA Keys simplifies assembly, saving time and labor costs while enhancing the overall performance of the system.

Results

With the GEOWEB Load Support System, Travis County successfully reinforced the evacuation route, ensuring long-term stability and reduced maintenance while meeting environmental and stormwater management requirements.
